What Are The Benefits Of Swimming While Pregnant?

During pregnancy, the shoulders and spine may undergo physiological and anatomical changes to counter-balance the weight of your pregnant belly. Swimming allows your muscles to improve in strength and functionality without putting extra strain on your body. Many women have even reported feeling less tired and sleeping better at night after swimming regularly.

Even if swimming isn’t really your thing, just allowing yourself some time to relax in the water can be very helpful towards your pregnancy. What Precautions Should You Take When Swimming During Pregnancy?

As we mentioned before, swimming is considered one of the safest exercises out there. However, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take a few precautions when you have a pregnancy to consider. After all, it is better to be safe than sorry.

Here are just a few tips to help you with you get the most out of your swim.

  • As always, you should consult with your doctor or midwife to ensure it is safe enough for you to swim. Though it is a low impact activity, if there are complications with your pregnancy, even swimming may be a bit risky.
  • Don’t forget to keep hydrated! It is recommended that you drink water before and in between swimming. Though that may seem silly since you are literally in water, being in the water isn’t the same as keeping hydrated. This is especially important if it is hot or humid during your swim.
  • If you can, try swimming for about 30 minutes everyday for the first trimester. You may even want to try swimming in the morning since it may counteract morning sickness and allows you to build up strength for the later trimesters.
  • During the early part of your pregnancy, all strokes are safe and suitable for your aqua fitness. However, the breaststroke is better for those in the later stages of pregnancy since it maintains posture and promotes the strength of back and chest muscles.
